Vellum Leaf from an Illuminated Antiphonary.

Vellum Leaf from an Illuminated Antiphonary.

c. 1500

This large and beautifully preserved manuscript leaf comes from a Latin Antiphonary dating to around 1500. Likely produced in a German scriptorium, it features red and black musical staves and Latin text on both sides. A colorful painted initial marks the beginning of a chant, adding a vivid focal point to the page. Still clean and vibrant, the leaf is a striking example of the artistry found in late medieval liturgical books.
