Hulricus Zvinglius (Ulrich Zwingli)

Hulricus Zvinglius (Ulrich Zwingli)

Year : 1599

Paper size 9 x 7" (22.9 x 17.7 cm)

Born in Wildhaus, Switzerland, on January 1, 1484, Ulrich Zwingli was a Swiss theologian and leader of the Reformation in Zurich, where he died in battle at Kappel on October 11, 1531. Hondius created this portrait in 1599 as part of his series Icones virorum nostra patrumque memoria illustrium, published in The Hague. It presents Zwingli in a finely detailed bust-length view, characteristic of Hondius's precise line work and balanced composition, and stands among the earliest engraved likenesses honoring the founders of the Reformation.
