The Choleric Temperament.
The Choleric Temperament.
1583
This engraved allegory, The Choleric Temperament, was created in 1583 by Raphael Sadeler I after a design by Maerten de Vos. Part of a series on the four temperaments, it personifies the choleric type, traditionally associated with fire, ambition, and anger, through dynamic composition and martial symbolism. The print reflects the late sixteenth-century fascination with human character and humoral theory, which blended classical allegory with moral instruction.
