1862

Major General Ambrose E. Burnside commanded the Union Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 13, 1862. In one of the war's most costly assaults, Burnside ordered repeated frontal attacks against entrenched Confederate positions on Marye's Heights, resulting in staggering Union losses. Though the battle ended in decisive defeat, it stands as one of the most famous episodes of the Civil War, remembered for the courage of the soldiers and the heavy toll of Burnside's ill-fated strategy.
