Nantucket Lighthouse.
Nantucket Lighthouse.
Year : c.1875
Image size 2 x 5 1/8" (5 x 13 cm).
A 19th-century view titled Nantucket Lighthouse, captured as an engraving and handcolored to highlight the details.
The lighthouse shown is Sankaty Head Lighthouse before it was moved. Located on Nantucket Island at the easternmost point in the village of Siasconset, the light went into service in 1850, was automated in 1965, and is still in operation. Sankaty Head Light was one of the first lighthouses in the United States to receive a Fresnel lens. The 'Sconset Trust acquired the lighthouse in 2007 and had it moved away from the eroding bluff. The keepers' houses shown in this engraving were torn down and replaced in 1888.
