Antietam.
Antietam.
1887
Issued by the American Lithographic Company, this print is from a later edition of Louis Prang's portfolio of eighteen important Civil War battles. Depicting the Battle of Antietam, fought in Maryland from September 16–18, 1862, it recalls one of the bloodiest engagements in American history. With over 23,000 casualties, the losses exceeded those of the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Spanish-American War combined. The Dunker Church appears in the background. This is a color proof, with the title not printed.
