Battle of the Weldon Rail-Road. August 21st 1864.

1864

Drawn by R. Holland and published by J.H. Bufford's Lith., Boston. The Battle of the Weldon Railroad, also known as the Battle of Globe Tavern, took place from August 18–21, 1864, during the American Civil War. It was the Union's second attempt to cut the Weldon Railroad, a key Confederate supply line into Petersburg. Union casualties exceeded 4,000, compared to about 1,600 Confederate losses, but the Federals succeeded in tearing up nearly 30 miles of track, forcing the Confederates to move supplies by wagon. Beneath the image are listed the Union regiments and divisions that took part in the engagement.
