Q.A. Gilmore : Maj. Genl. U.S.A.

Quincy A. Gillmore (1825-1888), was born in Ohio and graduated from West Point in 1849, first in his class. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Gillmore became chief engineer of the Port Royal Expedition under General Sherman. He is well known for his part in the siege of Fort Pulaski, where his proposal to use new naval technology led to a swift Confederate surrender. After a promotion in 1863 he was sent out on a campaign to recapture Fort Sumter. During this time he continued to use new, innovate technologies to lay siege on his enemy and bring victory to his troops. He would play yet another vital role in the war when he was sent to Washington D.C. in 1864, after a fall out with General Butler. General Early, of the Confederacy, had threatened to take the city and Gillmore was able to help pull together troops to protect it.
