Battle of Kenesaw Mountain. [Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia.]
1887
Issued by the American Lithographic Company, this print is from a later edition of Louis Prang's portfolio of eighteen important Civil War battles. An eighteen-color lithograph, it depicts the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, fought on June 27, 1864. In this engagement, General William T. Sherman ordered a frontal assault against Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston's entrenched position. The attack resulted in heavy losses—about 3,000 Union and 1,000 Confederate casualties. Johnston had established his lines on June 18–19 to defend the Western & Atlantic Railroad, the vital supply route to Atlanta.
