Battle of Shiloh.

Battle of Shiloh.

1887

Issued by the American Lithographic Company, this print comes from a later edition of Louis Prang's portfolio depicting eighteen important battles of the Civil War. In April 1862, as General Ulysses S. Grant awaited reinforcements, Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston launched a surprise attack against his position at Shiloh. Johnston was killed during the fighting, and the arrival of Union reinforcements ultimately strengthened Grant's forces, turning the tide of the battle.
