Battle of Spotsylvania.
Battle of Spotsylvania.
1887
Issued by the American Lithographic Company, this print is from a later edition of the Louis Prang portfolio of 18 important Civil War battles. In May of 1864, after the "Battle of the Wilderness", the Union army advanced on Richmond. The Confederate army stalled the advance at Spotsylvania court House for almost two weeks. The battle was tactically inconclusive, but with almost 32,000 casualties on both sides, it was the costliest battle of the campaign.
