On April 4, 1864, General Philip Sheridan took command of the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac, marking a new era for Union mounted forces in the Eastern theater. That September, at Opequon Creek, Sheridan's combined infantry and cavalry won a decisive victory, securing the Winchester–Berryville turnpike.
