The Battle of Stone River or Murfreesboro'.

1865

Union Private Alfred E. Mathews, who fought at Stones River, sketched a number of scenes from the battle. This lithograph, drawn from his eyewitness perspective and issued c. 1865, depicts Breckinridge's attack on the first day of the three-day conflict. Union artillery is shown positioned behind infantry lines, firing at Confederate forces advancing on the far right. A numbered key beneath the image identifies troops and positions, adding clarity to the unfolding scene.
