A View of the City of Boston the Capital of New England.

1775

This 18th-century engraving from the March 1775 issue of Universal Magazine depicts a well-known view of Boston, Massachusetts, from Castle Hill, Cambridge, looking across the Charles River. The print, based on an original view by Thomas Pownall, shows South Cove, South Battery, and Fort Hill, offering a slightly shortened but still recognizable perspective of the city. Published just prior to the start of the Revolutionary War, it provides a unique glimpse of Boston at a pivotal moment in American history.
