The Onconvanience of Single Life.

The Onconvanience of Single Life.

1865

Published around 1865 by Currier and Ives at 152 Nassau Street in New York, The Onconvenience of Single Life is a hand colored lithograph that pokes fun at the trials of bachelor living. A disheveled man struggles to sew up his torn trousers, holes in his socks, surrounded by the wreckage of a room that's the nineteenth century equivalent of having no bedframe, nothing but mustard in the kitchen, and not a houseplant in sight. A timeless portrait of life before the girlfriend effect brought curtains, throw pillows, and living greenery.
