The Old Oaken Bucket.
The Old Oaken Bucket.
Year : 1872
Small folio - image size 8 7/16 x 12 9/16" (21.5 x 31.9 cm).
This lithograph was inspired by Samuel Woodworth's famous poem "The Old Oaken Bucket." Originally written in 1817, it became a raging hit after composer George Kiallmark set the poem to music in 1826. Generations of Americans sang the tune and in 1899, the Haydn Quartet, one of the most famous barbershop quartets of their day, recorded their version of it to be played on the Berliner Gramophone.
Four lines of poem read, "How sweet from the green mossy brim to receive it, As poised on the curb it inclined to my lips, Not a full gushing goblet could tempt me to leave it, Though filled with the nectar that Jupiter sips."
