Johann Franz Graf von Wrbna-Freudenthal
Year : 1670
Paper size 9 1/4 x 6 1/2" ( 23.6 x 16.5 cm)
This c. 1670 copperplate engraving by Borcking shows Johann Franz Graf von Wrbna-Freudenthal in a bust-length portrait turned slightly to the right within an oval frame, his coat of arms and inscription placed below. A prominent Bohemian nobleman and jurist, Wrbna-Freudenthal served as Vice-President of the Court of Appeals in Prague and later became Oberster Böhmischer Kanzler (Chief Chancellor of Bohemia) in 1700, one of the highest offices in the Habsburg administration.
The portrait is striking for Wrbna-Freudenthal's spectacular, voluminous hairstyle"a dramatic cascade of curls characteristic of high Baroque fashion and one of the more memorable features of his engraved likeness.
