Vue de la Painte du Nord Est de L Isle Ste. Catherine (and) Vue de L'Entree Septentrionale du Port
Year : 1767
Image size 7 3/4 x 13 7/8" (19.6 x 25.2 cm).
Two finely detailed copper-engraved coastal views of Santa Catarina, issued in Paris around 1767 in the French editions of Jean Francois de La Harpe’s Histoire generale des voyages. One plate depicts the northeast point of the island, while the other shows the northern entrance to its port, both with European ships at anchor and under sail. These engravings reflect the island’s role as an important provisioning stop on South Atlantic routes and provide an early visual record of the Brazilian coast as seen by 18th-century European voyagers. Manuscript number in lower margin "No. 313"
