Clovis III, A Merovingian ruler.
Clovis III, A Merovingian ruler.
Year : 1588
Image size 7 7/8 x 5 1/8" ( 20.2 x 13 cm)
This print depicts Clovis III, a little-documented Merovingian ruler who was proclaimed king of Austrasia around 675, during a period marked by contested successions and the increasing authority of the mayors of the palace. Issued within Cronica breve de i fatti illustri de' re di Francia, published in Venice by Bernardo Giunti in 1588, the engraving forms part of the chronicle's orderly visual sequence of French kings. Clovis III is presented in the work's customary bust-length format, rendered with the firm and economical linework characteristic of the series. The portrait anchors him within the turbulent final decades of Merovingian rule, when royal legitimacy was frequently disputed and the foundations of Carolingian ascendancy were already taking shape.
