Mathias Zellius (Matthaus Zell).

Mathias Zellius (Matthaus Zell).

Year : 1630

Paper size 6 1/2 x 4 3/8" (16.6 x 11.1 cm)

Portrait of Matthaus Zell, the Strasbourg reformer and early supporter of Lutheran teaching, engraved around 1630 after a 1540 likeness. The plate was cut by Simon Wynhoutsz. Vries, a Dutch engraver active in The Hague and associated with the Hondius workshop, known for his clean linear technique and finely rendered portraiture. Shown in three-quarter view with a Latin identifying inscription, the print reflects the precise Northern manner characteristic of the Hondius studio and preserves one of the earliest documented images of Zell.
