Folium XX from the Nuremberg Chronicle.
Folium XX from the Nuremberg Chronicle.
c. 1500
This leaf, Folium XX verso from the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), is from the German edition and features a woodcut heraldic chart. The text traces the lineage of Terah, the grandfather of Israel, and his descendants, including Nahor, Bethuel, Laban, and Rebecca. Illustrated by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, with contributions believed to be from a young Albrecht Dürer, this page exemplifies the artistic ambition behind one of the most remarkable printed works of the 15th century. Printed by Anton Koberger in both Latin and German, the Nuremberg Chronicle remains one of the most influential illustrated books of all time.
