Perspective View of Lake George and Plan of Ticonderoga.

This attractive engraving was issued in The Universal Magazine to accompany H. Skinner’s Proceedings of the Army under the Command of General Amherst, for the Year 1759, and it vividly records Amherst’s successful campaign in the French and Indian War. The upper panel provides a perspective view of Lake George, likely oriented south to north, while the lower section offers a detailed plan of Fort Ticonderoga with a keyed legend marking twenty important sites and events during the British advance. In contrast to Abercrombie’s failed assault the year before, Amherst’s measured approach forced the French to destroy their defenses and abandon Carillon (Ticonderoga) with minimal losses. Noted at the time for its clarity and elegance, the engraving stands as a significant visual document of the British capture of this strategic stronghold on the “Great Warpath” between New England and French Canada.
