Exotic Butterflies, Plate CCLXXXVIII.

Exotic Butterflies, Plate CCLXXXVIII.

1778

From Pieter Cramer's De Uitlandsche Kapellen…/Papillons Exotiques (1775–1782), this plate presents Heber, Pyracmon, Caprotina, Erycata, Zerbina, Flavaria, and Brunnea. Cramer, a Dutch wool merchant and early entomologist, engaged Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to create detailed drawings of his collection, which were then engraved and finished with original hand coloring. As one of the first comprehensive studies of butterflies and moths from Asia, Africa, and the Americas, the series combined scientific rigor with artistic elegance, establishing a benchmark for 18th-century natural history illustration.
