Exotic Butterflies, Plate CCVIII.
Exotic Butterflies, Plate CCVIII.
1778
From Pieter Cramer's De Uitlandsche Kapellen…/Papillons Exotiques (1775–1782), this plate features Astinous (a.b.), Cribraria (c, g), Entella (d), Etolus (e, f), and Grynea (h). Cramer, a Dutch wool merchant and pioneering entomologist, commissioned Gerrit Wartenaar Lambertz to draw his vast collection of butterflies and moths, which were then engraved and hand colored with precision. Issued as one of the earliest large-scale works devoted to lepidoptera from Asia, Africa, and the Americas, the series represents a milestone in natural history illustration, admired for both its scientific accuracy and artistic refinement.
