This portrait depicts Peter Ernst I von Mansfeld-Vorderort (1517-1604), a German-born commander who served the Spanish Habsburgs for over six decades. A veteran of the 1535 Tunis campaign, he was later governor of Luxembourg and a Knight of the Golden Fleece. He played a key role in the Eighty Years' War and briefly governed the Spanish Netherlands from 1590 to 1594.
