Vdalricus Zafius (Ulrich Zasius).

This c. 1585 woodcut shows Ulrich Zasius (1461-1535), the noted German humanist and jurist whose reforms helped reshape early modern legal scholarship. A leading figure in Freiburg, Zasius championed a return to classical Roman sources and became one of the foremost interpreters of law in the 16th century.

The print is attributed to Dominicus Custos (c.1559-1615), the Flemish-German engraver who founded a major workshop in Augsburg. Born in Antwerp, Custos settled in Augsburg by 1584, worked for the Fugger family, and later produced commissions for Archduke Ferdinand of Tyrol. His marriage into the Kilian family helped establish the Custos-Kilian dynasty, one of the most important engraving lineages in southern Germany.
